We talked through and ascertained the necessary permissions for a side and rear extension which was fully glazed to the side and provided a parapet finish to the end elevation - a nod to the existing dwelling. A glazed infill extension flooded the new kitchen/dining space with natural light whilst reworking the existing single storey extension into a seating area. The addition of a glazed corner window provides a quiet space for contemplation. The extension was seen as a contemporary twist on the Arts and Crafts style of the existing dwelling with sweeping rounded corner and installing Crittal style doors throughout the ground floor. Due to the dwelling already being on four levels the newly built staircase had to meet stricter regulations for fire protection and was a key driver at the top end of project. Once we worked through the practical framework we got to work designing the space which allowed for kitchen, dining, living, office, utility WC and storage - with the latter all custom designed and built into an existing corridor space. We talked through and ascertained the necessary permissions for a light touch glazed slither to the side of the property- bringing light as deep into the plan as possible. Further flourishes include celebrating the structure by exposing the steelwork and a charred larch rear elevation. Utilising the existing party wall structures, a timber framed structure was dropped in and finished in charred larch to provide a visually distinctive addition to the existing red brick dwelling. Working within the constraints of the existing footprint, we opened up the floorplan by switching the fenestration. This simple move allowed for a flow from front to back door, with a visual line right through the property. The sliding window arrangement lets in extra light and allows for a new dining area. The existing property was unchanged from its Arts and Crafts origins, therefore the layout was segregated and very much of its time. The client enlisted WANA to open up the kitchen/dining spaces. Through a small intervention to the rear, we created a real wow factor to this space.
